- You are 15 years old or older.
- You had a penetrating injury to your abdomen that required emergency surgery.
- You are admitted to the surgical intensive care unit (ICU).
- You are not expected to be able to eat or drink for at least 72 hours after surgery.

- You are not pregnant (if female and able to become pregnant).
