Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are scheduled for major abdominal surgery and will need to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) afterward
  • You can receive nutrition through a feeding tube (into your stomach or small intestine) after surgery
  • You do not have conditions that prevent tube feeding, such as a blocked bowel, active stomach bleeding, or severe shock
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are able to give consent and are not having emergency surgery
