Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You have a severe open fracture (Gustilo-Anderson type IIIA or IIIB) in a long bone like the thigh, shin, or upper arm.
  • The fracture can be repaired with either a plate or a frame placed outside the skin.
  • The wound can be closed during surgery, with a skin graft, or allowed to heal on its own.
  • You do not have a brain injury, spinal cord injury, or severe burns.
  • You are willing to follow up after treatment and do not have allergies to certain antibiotics (ceftriaxone or sulbactam).
