Who can take part

  • You are 20 years or older
  • You have Parkinson's disease (80 people needed) or you are a healthy volunteer (20 people needed) for comparison
  • You are not currently taking Metformin, you can fast for 8 hours, you haven't used antibiotics in the past 3 months, and you don't have any serious intestinal diseases
  • You agree to have two brain imaging scans (one measures sugar use in the brain, the other looks at dopamine cells) – these are paid for by the study
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You and your family are willing to join the study
