Brain imaging study for Parkinson's disease

This study uses a special PET scan to look at inflammation in the brain of people with Parkinson's disease or those at risk for it. The goal is to better understand the disease and possibly find new ways to track its progression.

Who can take part

  • You are either a healthy volunteer or have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or are considered at risk (prodromal) as part of the PPMI study.
  • If you have Parkinson's, you have not started any Parkinson's symptom medication when you join, or in the first 2 years of the study.
  • You have a specific genetic type of a brain inflammation marker (called TSPO), which will be checked by a blood test.
  • If you are a woman able to have children, you must use highly effective birth control from 14 days before to at least 24 hours after the PET scan injection, and have a negative pregnancy test.
  • You have not had a high amount of radiation exposure (from medical scans) in the past year.
