Who can take part

  • You must be diagnosed with sepsis (a severe infection response) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS, serious lung failure).
  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You are expected to need a breathing machine for more than 48 hours.
  • You are expected to stay in the ICU for more than 7 days.
  • You cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a recent miscarriage.
  • You cannot have severe heart, brain, liver, kidney, mental health conditions, or certain other serious illnesses.
