Who can take part

  • You are 70 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) surgery that is not on the heart or chest.
  • Your risk of lung complications after surgery is moderately high or higher (based on a standard calculation your doctor can do).
  • You do not have a known problem that makes placing a breathing tube through your mouth difficult.
  • You do not have a high risk of stomach acid backing up into your throat.
  • You have not participated in another conflicting study in the past 3 months.
