  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for major abdominal surgery (like surgery on your stomach or intestines).
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or less.
  • You do not have a muscle or nerve disease, or a serious long-term lung condition.
  • You have not had any previous surgery on your belly or chest.
  • You can read and communicate without difficulty.
