Arterial Stiffness and Blood Pressure Treatment in Veterans

This study tests whether more intensive blood pressure lowering can improve artery health in older Veterans. You would be randomly assigned to standard or tighter blood pressure control and get free study-related care and monitoring.

Who can take part

  • You are 60 years of age or older
  • You have high blood pressure (based on clinic or home readings) or take medication for it
  • You are willing to be assigned by chance to either standard or more intensive blood pressure treatment
  • You are willing to have tests that check artery stiffness (tonometry) and a neck artery ultrasound
  • You do not have serious health conditions like recent heart problems, severe kidney disease, or active cancer (except early prostate or skin cancer)
  • You can attend study visits and follow the medication plan for 12 months
