Who can take part
- You are 18 or older.
- You are scheduled for an elective (planned) surgery that is moderate to high risk (not brain or heart surgery).
- Your surgery is expected to take more than 1 hour and you will stay in the hospital for at least 24 hours.
- You are not pregnant.
- You do not live at very high altitudes (above 2,500 meters).
- You do not have a blood disease other than anemia.
- You do not have a severe health issue (like advanced kidney failure or dementia) that would interfere with the study.
