Who can take part

  • You are having surgery to create a J-pouch (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).
  • Your anal sphincter muscles work normally (based on your history and a physical exam).
  • You are able to give written permission (informed consent) to participate.
  • During surgery, the surgeon finds that both a small (10 cm) and medium-sized (15 cm) pouch can be made without too much tension or trouble reaching.
