  • You are in the ICU because your lungs are not working well on their own.
  • Your breathing machine is set to a special mode that adjusts pressure automatically.
  • The size of each breath from the machine is set to a specific amount based on your ideal body weight.
  • You are not receiving any medication that paralyzes your muscles to help with breathing.
  • You or a family member must be able to agree to the study.
