Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You need brain surgery that involves brain mapping or a biopsy (tissue sample) for a condition like a tumor, epilepsy, or an arteriovenous malformation (a tangle of blood vessels).
  • You can understand the study and sign a form agreeing to participate.
  • You do not have severe kidney problems, are not taking a beta-blocker, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have no allergy to 5-ALA (a dye sometimes used in brain surgery), and you can have an MRI and electrical brain stimulation safely.
