Who can take part

  • You are 55 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for a first-time total knee replacement on the leg being studied.
  • You have normal bone density or mild bone thinning (osteopenia) that does not meet treatment guidelines for osteoporosis.
  • You have not taken any osteoporosis medications before.
  • You are not currently taking steroids or other bone-affecting drugs.
  • You do not have rheumatoid arthritis.
