RIRS under local anesthesia for kidney stones

This study looks at how well a procedure called RIRS (a type of keyhole surgery to remove kidney stones using a small camera) works when done with only local anesthesia (numbing medicine) instead of general anesthesia. It may be a good option if you have a 1-4 cm stone in your kidney or upper ureter and are in generally good health.

Who can take part

  • You have a kidney stone or a stone in the upper part of the ureter that is between 1 cm and 4 cm (about 0.4 to 1.6 inches).
  • You are between the ages of 18 and 70.
  • Your overall health is good enough to be classified as ASA I, II, or III (a standard measure of fitness for surgery, with I being healthy and III having a serious but not life-threatening condition).
  • You do not have stones in the middle or lower ureter that need additional surgery beyond RIRS.
  • You do not have any unusual anatomy of your urinary tract, such as a narrowed ureter, a horseshoe kidney, or a duplicated kidney.
  • You do not have severe heart, brain, or lung disease, and you are not pregnant.
