Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You have had a blunt (not sharp or penetrating) injury to your chest
  • Your doctor suspects you may have a costochondral joint separation (where the rib cartilage separates from the breastbone)
  • You agree to have both an ultrasound and a CT scan
  • You are not pregnant and can safely undergo a CT scan
  • You do not have air trapped under your skin (subcutaneous emphysema) that would block the ultrasound
  • You are not allergic to the gel used in ultrasound
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or less
