- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have rectal adenocarcinoma (cancer) that hasn't spread to distant organs.
- Your rectal tumor is within about 5 inches of your anal opening and hasn't threatened the surrounding tissue by more than 3 mm.
- You haven't had any prior treatment for your rectal cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation.
- Your blood counts, kidney, and liver function are within certain safe ranges.
- You do not have an active autoimmune disease or other serious illness that would interfere.
