How a gene affects alcohol response

Treatments studied

This study looks at how a specific gene (ZIP8) affects the way people respond to alcohol. You'll have MRI brain scans and may be given alcohol to see how your brain reacts. It's for healthy right-handed adults of European ancestry who have some drinking experience.

Who can take part

  • Be between 21 and 60 years old.
  • Be White and of European ancestry (due to a specific gene variant studied).
  • Be a non-smoker (no cigarettes in the past year, never smoked daily for more than 1 month).
  • Have some previous experience with alcohol, including having 5 or more drinks on one occasion at least once in your life.
  • Not have any major medical, psychiatric, or substance use problems, and not be seeking alcohol treatment.
  • Be right-handed, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and able to have an MRI (no metal implants, no severe claustrophobia).
