Who can take part
- Be age 21–60 and able to complete English study tasks and tests
- Have smoking history that fits one of the study groups (smoker or non-smoker as defined)
- Be in one of the required CHRNA5 gene groups (AA/AG or GG)
- For women who could become pregnant: use an acceptable birth-control method, and test negative for pregnancy before each visit
- Be willing to follow screening rules, including avoiding drugs/alcohol around the study and passing breathalyzer/urine drug tests
- Be medically and mentally able to take part: no major illnesses, no significant recent psychiatric disorders, and no MRI safety blockers (like certain implants)
