This study compares two surgical techniques to repair large Achilles tendon defects (more than 4 cm). It is for people who have a large gap in their Achilles tendon, often from a rupture, tendinopathy, or after tumor removal. The goal is to see if adding a calf muscle reinforcement gives better results than a tendon transfer alone.

Who can take part

  • Must be at least 13 years old for females or 15 years old for males (skeletally mature).
  • Has an Achilles tendon defect larger than 4 cm from a tear, surgery, or tumor removal.
  • Does not have a broken heel bone or subtalar fusion on the same leg.
  • No active infection or prior surgery on the back of the foot or ankle on the same side.
  • Does not have certain inflammatory conditions like spondyloarthropathies or sarcoidosis.
  • Able to undergo surgery (no general medical reasons that make surgery unsafe).
