- You are between 25 and 60 years old.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is between 30 and 45. (If you already lost weight with medication, you must have had a BMI in that range before starting.)

- Your weight has been stable for at least the last 3 to 6 months, depending on the group.
- You do not have diabetes, a smoking habit, or certain health problems like pancreatitis or liver disease.
- Women who could become pregnant must use reliable birth control. You cannot be pregnant or nursing.
