Measuring nutrient absorption in ICU patients on tube feeding

Post-ICU Patients Fully Enterally Fed

This study checks how well patients who are still in the hospital after an ICU stay absorb the nutrients from their tube feeding. A special test called bomb calorimetry will measure the calories in stool to see if the body is getting the energy it needs.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for at least 7 days.
  • You are getting all your nutrition through a feeding tube (nasogastric or PEG tube).
  • You do not have inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis).
  • You do not have a condition that causes poor absorption of nutrients, and you have not had part of your small intestine removed.
  • You are not taking certain medications (like some antidepressants, triptans, methylphenidate, tramadol, or MAO inhibitors).
