If you are having one of several common heart surgeries for the first time (not an emergency), you may be able to take part.

Who can take part
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You are scheduled for elective (non-emergency) coronary artery bypass, valve repair/replacement, or a combined bypass and valve procedure through a breastbone incision (sternotomy).
- This must not be a repeat of the same surgery (a redo operation).
- You must not have had prior chest surgery (thoracotomy) or a mastectomy.
- You must not have chronic pain or be on regular strong pain medicines (opioids) or sedatives.
