- You are 18 years or older.
- You are scheduled for heart surgery through a cut in the middle of your chest (sternotomy), such as bypass surgery or valve repair/replacement.
- Your surgery is planned ahead of time, not an emergency.
- You have not had this type of heart surgery before, and you have not had surgery or a mastectomy on your chest area in the past.
- You do not have chronic pain or take strong painkillers or sedatives regularly.
- Your kidneys are working well (no severe kidney failure).
