Breathing and trunk muscle training for Parkinson's

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your thinking and memory are reasonably intact (score of 19 or more on a cognitive test called MoCA)
  • You have a forward stoop (at least 25 degrees in the upper back or 15 degrees in the lower back) when standing or walking, but it goes away completely when you lie down
  • You do not have severe involuntary movements or unpredictable 'on-off' periods
  • Your Parkinson's medications have not changed in the past 3 months
  • You have not had major spine surgery or have a spinal condition
  • You can get up from a chair or bed without help
  • You do not have other conditions that affect balance or posture (like heart, nerve, or bone problems)
  • You can seal your lips adequately for breathing exercises
