Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You need a bronchoscopy to check for lung problems (like suspected cancer or sarcoidosis).
  • Your blood gas test shows high carbon dioxide (>45 mmHg) or high bicarbonate (>27 mmol/l), but your pH is at least 7.35.
  • You must sign a consent form to join the study.
  • You cannot have severe heart disease, unstable angina, recent heart attack, or serious arrhythmias.
  • You cannot have a collapsed lung without a chest tube, very low platelets, or severe anemia.
  • You cannot be on a breathing tube already.
