Who can take part

  • You have COPD that has been graded as GOLD C or D
  • Your lung test shows poor airflow (FEV1 under 65%)
  • Your blood gases show high CO2: pH is low (below 7.35) and CO2 is high (PaCO2 at least 45 mmHg), and you were on a breathing ventilator for over 24 hours
  • After stopping the breathing machine, your blood gases stay with pH above 7.35 and CO2 above 45 mmHg for 48 hours to 2 weeks while resting during the day
  • You are able to follow the trial plan and give informed consent (or have someone able to consent for you)
  • You are not currently on long-term breathing support like home NIV or CPAP
