Who can take part

  • Your baby must be born before 32 weeks of pregnancy (very preterm).
  • Your baby must be less than 72 hours (3 days) old when starting the trial.
  • The doctor must recommend caffeine for your baby, for example, to help with breathing pauses or to protect the lungs.
  • Your baby cannot have already received caffeine or similar medicines before the trial.
  • Your baby cannot have major birth defects, such as serious heart or gut problems, or known genetic conditions.
  • Your baby must not be expected to die within 24 hours, and intensive care must be ongoing or planned.
