Testing bacterial DNA in belly fluid to diagnose SBP in cirrhosis

This study tests a new way to detect bacteria in the fluid in your belly (ascites) to see if it can quickly diagnose a serious infection called spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in people with cirrhosis. If you have cirrhosis and ascites, this trial may help improve how fast infections are found.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with cirrhosis, a condition where the liver is scarred.
  • You have fluid buildup in your belly, called ascites, which is related to your liver disease.
  • You do not have an active infection in another part of your body, like a urinary tract or lung infection.
  • You are not pregnant, do not use intravenous drugs, and do not have HIV.
  • You are not currently taking steroids or other medicines that weaken your immune system.
