Light and nerve stimulation for alcohol cravings

Normal Subjects

This study tests if combining two gentle brain and nerve stimulation methods (light on the head and mild electrical pulses on the ear) can reduce alcohol cravings and change brain activity in people who drink but do not have alcohol use disorder. Participants will attend sessions for 5 weeks.

Who can take part

  • You are between 19 and 40 years old.
  • You drink alcohol and have an AUDIT-K score of 4 or higher (a short questionnaire about drinking habits).
  • You do NOT have alcohol use disorder (a severe drinking problem).
  • You are able to complete a 5-week stimulation program (visits once a week or as scheduled).
  • You are not pregnant.
  • You have no metal allergies that could interfere with the stimulation devices.
  • You have not been diagnosed with any substance use disorder other than alcohol or nicotine.
