Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are having heart surgery using a heart-lung machine (bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement, or a combination).
  • Your surgeon will place temporary pacing wires on your heart during the operation.
  • You will have a special catheter (Swan-Ganz) placed to monitor your heart's function.
  • You must be able to give informed consent.
