Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older
  • You must be hospitalized with a chest tube draining infected fluid from around your lung
  • Your pleural fluid must be pus-like, have bacteria, or meet lab criteria (low pH, low glucose, or high LDH)
  • You must still have fluid or signs of infection 24 hours after your chest tube was placed
  • You cannot have had a stroke, major bleeding, trauma, or major surgery in the last 5 days
  • You cannot be on blood thinners that can't be stopped for 48 hours before treatment
