Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 70 years old.
- You have been diagnosed with rectal cancer that is stage 2 or 3 (tumor has grown into or through the rectal wall, or has spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to other organs).
- Your tumor is in the low or mid rectum (within about 6 inches from the opening).
- You are well enough to have daily activities with only minor help (ECOG score 0 to 2).
- Your blood counts and kidney/liver function are within safe ranges.
- You have not had prior radiation to the pelvis, previous surgery for this cancer, or another cancer in the last 5 years.
