Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 75 years old.
  • You need to have type 2 diabetes or at least one sign of metabolic syndrome, like a large waistline, high blood pressure, or abnormal cholesterol.
  • You must be willing to have a liver biopsy.
  • You cannot have other liver diseases, such as hepatitis B or C.
  • You must not drink heavily (more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 per day for men).
  • You need to be willing to follow study rules, which may include fasting before tests.
