- You are 18 years or older.
- You have a confirmed or suspected infection (a test found a germ, or you are on antibiotics).
- Your infection is severe enough to need intensive care (ICU) or you are expected to be admitted to the ICU.
- You can be enrolled within 24 hours of meeting the other criteria.
- You have been in the hospital for less than 2 days.
- You are not on long-term dialysis, do not have a tracheostomy (breathing tube in your neck) with a ventilator, and are not pregnant.
