Who can take part

  • You were 18 or older when you entered the ICU.
  • You needed a breathing machine (ventilator) within 48 hours of ICU admission, expected to be used for at least 48 hours, OR your ICU stay was expected to last 3 days or more.
  • You are not in another study that could affect your physical, thinking, or emotional recovery.
  • You do not have a progressive brain or nerve disease like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.
  • You do not have serious leg weakness from a nerve injury or spinal cord injury.
  • You are not receiving palliative or hospice care, and your life expectancy is at least 3 months.
  • You are not expected to have trouble following up after ICU (for example, being transferred far away or having no stable home).
