Who can take part

  • You are 65 years or older
  • Your health status is rated as ASA I, II, or III (generally stable health)
  • You are scheduled for a planned hip replacement on one side through a back or side incision
  • You are not allergic to the medicines used in the study (ropivacaine or dexamethasone)
  • You do not take strong painkillers regularly (less than 30 morphine milligram equivalents per day)
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder, active infection near the injection site, severe obesity (BMI over 40), existing leg weakness or nerve problems, or memory/thinking issues that would prevent you from giving consent
