Who can take part

  • You must be between 65 and 85 years old.
  • You must have newly diagnosed esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that has not spread to distant organs (except certain nearby lymph nodes).
  • You must be in fairly good physical condition (able to do all daily activities without help or with minimal help).
  • You cannot have had any prior chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery for this cancer.
  • Your lungs, kidneys, liver, and blood counts must be within acceptable ranges.
  • You must not have a history of certain lung diseases or severe heart/lung problems.
