Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be able to provide a saliva sample after not eating, drinking, chewing gum, brushing your teeth, or smoking for 1 hour.
  • If you have gum disease, you must have a clinical diagnosis of periodontitis based on specific gum pocket and bone loss measurements.
  • If you are a healthy volunteer, you must have no signs of gum disease (no deep pockets, minimal bleeding, and no bone loss on x-rays).
  • You must not have taken antibiotics or certain anti-inflammatory drugs in the last 3 months.
  • You must not have had gum treatment (like deep cleaning or surgery) in the last 6 months.
