Who can take part

  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You are currently in an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You have a breathing tube in your throat (endotracheal intubation).
  • You have been on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for at least 12 hours.
  • Your doctor plans to try removing the breathing machine within the next 6 hours, or has done so in the past 2 hours.
  • This is your first attempt to come off the breathing machine.
