This study compares two ways of removing the breathing tube (extubation) in patients who are ready to breathe on their own: taking the tube out right away, or doing a trial of breathing without the machine first. It is for people who are at low risk of needing the tube put back in.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 65 years old.
  • You have been on a breathing machine for 1 to 4 days.
  • You are ready to try breathing on your own (based on simple checks like your breathing rate and oxygen levels).
  • You do not have serious heart, lung, nerve, or swallowing conditions.
  • You do not have a tracheostomy, a BMI over 30, or a brain injury.
