Who can take part

  • You have been on a breathing machine for more than 2 days.
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • Your doctors have checked that your heart and blood pressure are stable enough to try weaning.
  • You have awake and alert enough to try breathing on your own, and have already passed a short test breathing without full support.
  • The oxygen level in your blood is good (oxygen in air < 50%, blood oxygen level > 200), and you are not breathing too fast (less than 30 breaths per minute).
  • You do not have any muscle or nerve disease, or damage to the diaphragm.
