Who can take part
- You are 18 or older
- You are scheduled for major open or laparoscopic abdominal surgery (either planned or emergency)
- You can provide a blood or tissue sample before and within 24 hours after surgery
- Your blood pressure and heart function are stable before surgery
- You do not have active infections like HIV, active hepatitis, or untreated tuberculosis
- You are not on long-term steroids or medicines that suppress your immune system
- You do not have severe liver or kidney failure, or serious heart disease
