Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be admitted to the ICU at the study hospital.
  • You are expected to stay in the ICU for at least 48 hours.
  • You must be able to breathe on your own or with a breathing machine to provide a breath sample.
  • You or a family member must give permission to take part.
  • You cannot have carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • You must not have smoked in the 24 hours before entering the ICU.
  • You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You cannot have certain inherited blood disorders like sickle cell disease or thalassemia.
