Nerve stimulation plus 3 anti-nausea drugs for surgery nausea

This trial tests whether combining a gentle electrical nerve stimulation technique (called TEAS) with three standard anti-nausea medicines can better prevent nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic surgery in women at high risk. If you qualify, you would receive the stimulation plus the medicines, or the medicines alone, to see which works best.

Who can take part

  • You are a woman between 18 and 65 years old having laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
  • You are at high risk for nausea or vomiting after surgery – this means being female, a non-smoker, and having a history of nausea/vomiting after surgery or motion sickness.
  • You are in generally stable health (ASA class I, II, or III).
  • You do not have certain heart problems, kidney or liver disease, or conditions affecting the inner ear or nerves.
  • You have not taken anti-nausea medicine, strong painkillers, or steroids in the 24 hours before surgery.
