  • You have a body mass index (BMI) of 24 or higher
  • You are willing to follow a low-carb, reduced-calorie diet
  • You agree to use effective birth control if you could become pregnant, starting 2 weeks before the study and continuing for 6 months after
  • You have not taken antibiotics in the last 3 months
  • You do not smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day
