Who can take part

  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) for a medical, surgical, or trauma reason.
  • Your hemoglobin level is between 7 and 9 g/dL (moderate anemia).
  • Your blood pressure is stable (mean artery pressure above 65), and you need little or no medication to keep it up.
  • You are breathing steadily—either on no support, oxygen via mask or nasal tube, or on a ventilator with low settings.
  • You have a central line and arterial line in place, and doctors can measure your urine output every hour.
  • A special heart and lung monitoring device (PiCCO) or expert ultrasound (ECHO) is available within 48 hours.
