- You are scheduled for elective abdominal surgery with a cut that will be about 5 to 9 cm long.
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- Your BMI is between 19 and 28, and you weigh at least 100 lbs (45 kg for women, 110 lbs or 50 kg for men).
- You are generally healthy, with no serious conditions like diabetes, heart problems, or a history of drug abuse.
- You have not taken certain pain or sedative medications within the past week.
- You are not pregnant or planning to become pregnant, and you are willing to use birth control.
