Who can take part
- Scheduled for planned (non-emergency) heart surgery with or without a heart-lung machine
- Have at least one risk factor for kidney injury (such as age 70+, diabetes, or prior kidney disease)
- Kidneys are working at a mild-to-moderate level (eGFR 30–60), not severely damaged
- No signs of kidney injury, severe electrolyte imbalances, or respiratory failure at enrollment
- Not pregnant, not on dialysis, and no end-stage heart or kidney disease
- Expected to survive at least one year after surgery
