Who can take part

  • You or your child are between 2 and 70 years old
  • You need surgery inside your throat, nose, or skull base that requires soft-palate support during the procedure
  • Your soft palate tissue is healthy with no ulcers, scars, or sores before surgery
  • You do not have a cleft palate (a split in the roof of the mouth, present from birth)
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have no active infections and can safely undergo surgery based on heart, lung, and kidney function

Comparing gels to prevent sore throat after surgery

This trial compares two gels (betamethasone and lidocaine) applied to the breathing tube to see which is better at preventing a sore throat after surgery. If you are having a planned surgery under general anesthesia, this study may help find a way to reduce throat pain afterwards.

Preventing tracheostomy after neck surgery with a breathing mask

This trial tests whether using a special breathing mask (called BiPAP) right before and after neck surgery can prevent the need for a tracheostomy (a tube placed in the throat to help breathing) in people who are at high risk for vocal cord paralysis. This could help you avoid a more invasive breathing tube after surgery.
