Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with small bowel obstruction confirmed by a CT scan (a detailed imaging test)
  • You do not already have a nasogastric tube in place
  • You are not planned for emergency surgery in the next few hours
  • You do not have certain neurological conditions (ALS, cerebral palsy, dementia, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis)
  • You have not had a stroke that left you unable to swallow safely
  • You do not have signs of pneumonia or lung inflammation on your CT scan
